EdSource is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to clarify complex education issues and to promote thoughtful policy decisions about public school improvement.
We do not advocate or lobby. Over nearly three decades we have developed a solid reputation as a credible and respected source of K–12 education information, research, analysis, and data. The expertise of EdSource’s small staff of policy analysts, researchers, writers, and communication and outreach specialists is strengthened by a top-notch, diverse, statewide board of directors and by a large, outstanding, diverse, and changing group of external reviewers who volunteer to review our work-in-progress and offer their expertise through comment.
EdSource was originally established in 1977 by three well-known and respected civic organizations: the California Parent Teacher Association, the League of Women Voters of California, and the American Association of University Women, California. Initially, the agency was called the California Coalition for Fair School Finance, since the goal was to establish a neutral, balanced, reliable source of information to explain California’s controversial court decision on school funding known as Serrano v. Priest. The high-profile decision mandated funding equity among all the state’s school districts.
Since that time, EdSource has kept a unique, core competency for impartially studying and clearly reporting on California school finance, while also broadening the education policy and school reform topics it researches. It has widened its audience to include state and federal policymakers, researchers and higher ed faculty, K–12 teachers and administrators, education media, and parent and community leaders.
Our Work
In addition to our new website, California School Finance, EdSource’s small staff offers the following programs and services:
- A wide range of publications, including several original full-length single-topic reports each year on California’s most important public education policy issues and events, a number of parent guides in English and Spanish, and a series of 1- to 2-page fact sheets and issue briefs.
- An annual Information Service subscription to those publications, with various levels of service.
- E-mail alerts through our listserv about new publications, upcoming events, or other important information.
- A free newsletter, published three times per year, with updates on our program. Call our office if you would like to be added to our general mailing list.
- An annual Forum on California Education Policy, open to the public and held each spring in both Northern and Southern California on current education policy and reform issues. Call the office or check EdSource Online for registration and program details.
- Two other websites: EdSource Online for a broad range of California education policy issues at www.edsource.org and the Education Data Partnership website for extensive California school finance and performance data at www.ed-data.k12.ca.us
- Periodic presentations at statewide meetings.
- Serving as a prime contractor or subcontractor with other impartial research and policy firms to develop value-added information on important California education issues.
